Great interview, Kate! I love your reflections on creativity and the many ways it shows up in our lives. Creativity is not limited to art but so many people see it that way.

Kate! It was so wonderful to see this interview with you! And to see the intersection with so many of the themes you shared in your spotlight interview for the Light House. I don’t think I knew you were into various arts and crafts from a young age. I hope the handwork crafts can come back into your life once your son gets a little older. 😊

Really enjoyed reading this Heidi and Kate - the story about trying to dig from England to Sydney made me smile 😃! I can totally relate to creating in the margins too as I'm a SAHM of three, though my eldest two are in school, nap times for my 20 month old son are my only time to create. I really like how you reframed only getting to create for short amounts of time and also how creativity will find you too. I'd love to try embroidery and digital illustration too. At the moment, crochet is my creative hobby of choice, luckily my son isn't that interested in grabbing the wool! X

Thank you, Jenna! I once read about a writer who wrote poems not novels, because she could hold a poem in her head while she cleaned up the house etc, and I totally relate to that. It doesn't sound satisfying, but it's so much more satisfying than throwing your hands up and doing nothing creative!

I can totally relate to that too! And yes, I'm with you Heidi, just doing small creative acts beats doing nothing, plus they all add up. I'm allfor imperfect action over here! X

I love this idea Heidi, what a great way to adapt. I wonder if trying out a different form also influenced her novels when she went back to them? It must have been a fascinating experiment either way.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Kids have so much imagination don’t they? Our grasp of geology clearly wasn’t great but I’d give us top marks for determination! I love that we are both creating during nap times - I think if that hadn’t clicked for me I would still be waiting around feeling stuck so I’m really glad it did. Crochet sounds lovely - both knitting and crochet are on my learning list for the future. At the moment my main textile craft is cross-stitch and I have to concentrate quite hard on the counting so between that and the sharpness of the needles/attractiveness of the threads it’s not very practical for me to do but I’ll get back to it at some point I’m sure!

Absolutely! Yes, it's so easy to wait and say I'll do that when I have time, but then that time never comes. So there's a sense of freedom when you realise that you can create that time, even if it's only for a short time. I'd love to learn to knit too. Cross stitch sounds wonderful, but yes I can imagine you need the concentration and the space to do it as well. The nice thing about it is it's there waiting for you and sometimes just having a project that you can go back to is a nice feeling.

That’s the kind of project I can handle right now too. I can’t find a way to keep my paints out for easy access but I can keep my sketchbook by the bed, and that still feels fun.

I love that, and you still get the enjoyment too
