KRista! This was so wonderful to read. I was nodding along to so much of your story, especially your magical girlhood. Mine was very similar and reading your story put to words what I’m grieving while watching my four year old in her own magical girlhood. I’m grieving mine and hers (although part of me hopes that maybe hers will never have to die?). Was there anything you did while your girls were young that you feel nourished their magical girlhoods?
I'm so called this resonated Krista, and good name BTW :) Maybe with a mom stepping into this with so much consciousness as yourself, your daughter's magical girlhood will be indefinitely prolonged! My mom didn't have that you certainly do. Girl Scouts was great was for my girls - we invited a different guest speaker each meeting who was a woman having success in a different interesting career they could learn from (a judge, a mayor, a scientist etc). We stayed away from screens as much possible. So much reading. We crafted everything and to this day they make handmade cards for everyone out of habit. I didn't overschedule them, there's free play, and they found their way to their own few friends. I like that they seem to be proud of their individuality and aren't falling prey to peer pressure or a need to fit in...Fingers crossed!
Heidi, I'm honored to be included in this great project! Thanks for having me here, it was so much fun to think about this fertile/tangled intersection of motherhood/creativity, and get it down in words.
