I’ve been polishing an essay that’s coming out soon (yay!), and it’s changed a lot since I submitted it. I’m happy with the changes, but the essay is very different than the way I originally envisioned it, which was more literary and less conversational. I wanted to make THIS version the best it could be, so before I sat down to make the revisions I did a little journaling about WHO I’m writing to, WHAT I’m trying to say, and WHY I am sharing this part of my life.
Do you ever step away from your manuscript and journal about it?
I find it really helpful. It’s like having a conversation with a friend. I usually walk away with more clarity and energy than I had before. And in a case like this, where I’ve been working on something for a long time, it can help me focus on what’s most important.
That’s kind of what creative coaching is like, at least when it’s via email, which is how I work with most of my clients. It gives me a chance to ask questions, carefully consider their answers, and craft my own answers in an honest, thoughtful way. I’ve had lots of clients tell me they figured something out just through the process of writing to me. Others tell me they save my emails so they can go back to them as they work on other projects. (Oh my heart!)

PS—The fastest way to grow as a writer is to book a manuscript critique or a creative coaching session with an expert.
My clients get agents, sell books, and win awards. They also learn how to find ease and joy in the creative process, so they can keep going when life gets hard.
Aww thanks for reading! And for the shout out :) And I love journaling about stuff. Totally helps me get out of the pressure of the blank page
