I just finished editing a MG book about cutting-edge science, and there are several interviews in the book with scientists who are studying everything from phytoplankton to black holes. Over and over they say that they knew they wanted to be a scientist when they watched October Sky, The Abyss, or some other pivotal sci-fi moment.
This is the power of art!
It genuinely changed the trajectory of their lives.
Why am I sharing this with you?
Because you never know what effect your writing will have on someone. Writers work alone for so long, it can be hard to believe anyone will ever read our work. When you’re a children’s book writer, it’s even harder to connect directly with your readers. But when you see someone reading your book…when a child clutches it to their chest like it’s the most precious thing in the world…when you get a picture of your friend’s kid reading YOUR book by flashlight in bed…when they can’t wait to tell their friends about their new favorite book…it is life giving!
I hope each and everyone of you has a moment like that.
And I hope you’ll remember that what you’re doing is life changing. You are creating something out of nothing. You’re showing kids what’s possible. You’re encouraging them to dream big by living your own dream.
Feeling motivated to finish that manuscript and get it out into the world where it can inspire readers?
I would love to help you create something life changing.
This Week I’m…
Requesting all these unconventional picture books from the library 🤩
Adding this one to my grown-up stack of books too 🦊
Keeping it short while I host the Mental Health and Motherhood Conference! 😘
Nebula Notebook is a place to meet kindred spirits, get inspired, and learn how to find ease and joy in the creative process—even when life is bananas. 🍌🍌🍌
✏️ PS—The fastest way to grow as a writer is to book a manuscript critique or a creative coaching session with an expert. My clients get agents, sell books, and win awards. They also learn how to enjoy the creative process, so they can keep going when life gets hard. 👏
