Did you think of yourself as a creative kid? What did you do for fun?
Yes! I was one of those kids who was on the quiet side. I felt happiest in my room with scrapbooks and sketchbooks. One of my most vivid childhood memories is taking a set of travel watercolors to a lake at night and sitting and painting. It was such a peaceful and content hour of my life that still makes me smile.
What does creativity look like for you these days?
Creativity today looks like me waking up at 5am before the rest of my house, making coffee and having at least an hour to hear my own thoughts, write, collect, edit, read, and let my mind wander wherever it wants to... Once I get this hour, I get to show up as the person I want to be.
An excerpt from Olivia’s essay “What You Find When You Lose Yourself in Motherhood”
What do you hope your kids will learn about creativity from you?
I hope they learn that their creativity is theirs. It doesn't just exist for the sake of career or production. Their creativity is theirs to tap into when they want to know themselves better. Or when they want to heal. Or when they want to grow. I hope I've shown them that it takes creativity to partner and parent. It takes creativity to build a life that is truly their own. I hope they know that our family, the one I always wanted, is the thing I'm most proud of creating.
When do you feel most creative?
When I'm walking outside. I'm a new (and anxious) driver so I spend a lot of time walking outside no matter what the weather is.

✏️ PS—The fastest way to grow as a writer is to book a manuscript critique or a creative coaching session with an expert. My clients get agents, sell books, and win awards. They also learn how to enjoy the creative process, so they can keep going when life gets hard. 👏
I love this! “Creativity today looks like me waking up at 5am before the rest of my house, making coffee and having at least an hour to hear my own thoughts, write, collect, edit, read, and let my mind wander wherever it wants to...” - this is inspiring 💜
"It takes creativity to build a life that is truly their own."
Such a beautiful frame of creativity.
