At the beginning of summer, I got the chance to go away for two nights with my mom. It's the first time I've stayed in a hotel in YEARS, and it felt so good. White sheets. Hipster robes. Room service. Quiet. Quiet. Quiet.
Are you exhaling just thinking about it? I am!
During the day, my mom and I wandered around MASS MoCA and The Clark, and at night I wrote. I didn't intend to spend the weekend working, but I had so many ideas I had to take notes. I finally felt like starting a picture book draft I had been daydreaming about for months. I read some academic papers and developed the seeds of Mothers Who Make. I got so much done!
I wish I could go on a little retreat every month. Or at least every year! But that's just not my life right now. And it's probably not your life either. That's why I created Before You Begin. It's a writing retreat you can do at home, and while it's not as good room service (what is?) it is life changing. Burnt-out writers email me gushing about how excited they are to write again. Newbies tell me they're less scared and ready to actually get something down on paper. Writers who feel lost, like they have no idea what they're even trying to make, finish Before You Begin with clarity. Sometimes they even finish with an outline!
If you can't get away, maybe you can treat yourself to a writing retreat at home...
In this four-week experience, I’ll guide you through the gentle practices that have brought me comfort even when I feel stuck, don’t know what to write next, or just want to create something that feels true and meaningful, but I’m not sure where to begin. The process is meant to be a tiny bit luxurious and help you sink into your most creative state, so treat each email you receive as an invitation to take a mini writing retreat. The quieter and more contemplative you can get during this stage, the more space there will be for your innate creativity to shine. You’ll be able to hear your intuition, and eventually, when it’s time to put words on the page, you’ll know what to do, and the writing process will be easier. It’s honestly a kind of magical.
